Utah Planner Newsletter Editors

When One Door Closes...

another is opened.  With that tidbit of pop philosophy, we would like to introduce ourselves as the new editors of the newsletter for the Utah Chapter of the American Planning Association.  As our members have seen, the duties of this position have been passed around several times in the last couple of years.  Now, as an experiment (and a last ditch effort by Chuck to get the position filled) we have assembled a small team (or dynamic duo) to take over the editorial duties from John Ayer.

Angelo Calacino, AICP, is a Planner with Aspen Resources, Inc., in Salt Lake City and has a variety of public and private sector experience.  Angelo’s failed bid for the chapter treasurer and being a glutton for punishment led him to this position.  Grant Crowell, AICP, is Senior Planner at Draper City, and a former co-worker of Angelo’s.  This relationship led Angelo to volunteer (sacrifice) Grant for this job.

As we jump feet first into what should be a challenging and rewarding job, we thought we would take this opportunity to put forth a welcome message and statement of objectives for the upcoming year.  First, we are going to move up the mailing date for the issues so members will receive the newsletter around the 15th of the month (10 issues a year).  This will put a crunch on the next issue, but it is workable.  Keep in mind that we are also relying on the Postal Service to hold up their end.  Second, we are actively trying to program a year in advance.  This is where you (the members) come in.

How can you help to publish a quality chapter newsletter?  By volunteering to write an article on a topic of interest; by suggesting topics that you will find informative, interesting, or entertaining; and by commenting to us on what you like or dislike about the newsletter’s topics or format.  We will have a virtual open-door policy for feedback.

As for the format of the newsletter, we would like to create a standard.  This standard is in development, but will generally consist of: a feature article, message from the president, a legal article, an article from a developer or specific development, an editor’s message, letters to the editor, up and coming events, and, of course, the all time favorite "Planners on the Move".

To that end, we look forward to working with you to enhance the newsletter.  Remember that your participation is critical.  Please keep us informed of events, projects, job openings, planners on the move, or just simple good deeds being done in your community. Please send any and all correspondence to:
