Call for Manuscripts

Journal of the American Planning Association

The Journal of the American Planning Association (JAPA) solicits manuscripts on all aspects of the practice and theory of planning. Editors Deborah Howe, Carl Abbott, and Sy Adler, based at Portland State University, welcome the submission of papers that address the many and varied challenges that confront all those involved in planning and plan implementation. The editors encourage scholars and practitioners to write about the global dimensions within which urban, suburban, and rural changes are taking place, as well as to explore the historical context of contemporary issues. Papers discussing new tools and techniques and ones evaluating the effectiveness of established methods are also sought.

Examples of the types of such papers include:

  • documentation and evaluation of new techniques and procedures,

  • reflective discussion of planning practice,

  • empirical research, and

  • case studies that illuminate important planning and development issues.

The editors are especially interested in having practitioners share their experience and insights to advance the science and art of planning. To this end, planning professionals are invited to submit both full-length papers (5,000-6,000 words) as described above, and shorter (2,500-3,000 words) contributions to the Planner's Notebook section, which deal directly with the practice of planning.

Planner's Notebook submissions should be designed for  professionals and citizens seeking new and better ways to gather and analyze information, develop plans, or implement projects and policies.

Assistance is available for potential authors who are not accustomed to writing for publication. The Managing Editor, Peter Link, is experienced in writing instruction and is available to help practitioners interested in contributing.

Authors may query the editors about possible paper topics at the address below with a 300-word abstract. All submissions considered for publication in JAPA are evaluated through a blind peer review process that takes, on average, about eleven weeks. In composing submissions, please follow the guidelines printed inside the back cover of each issue or on the web site www.iava.vdx.edu.
